Work experiences are a critical component of preparing youth for transition to adulthood and the workforce. Benefits to youth who participate in work experiences include; gaining career readiness skills, and establishing a work history and connections that can aid in future employment. Soft skills including; gaining self-confidence, self-discipline, getting along with others, and the responsibility of making and managing one’s own money.
SLEP runs the Provincial, Summer Company Program for students aged 15-29 years old who are returning to school in the fall. The programs enables youth to start their own business. Students who qualify can receive an award up to $1,500 to assist with business start-up costs and $1,500 on completion of the program. At the end of the program many students have said that coaching and entrepreneurship skills they received was as valuable as the money they earned. We have also observed that many students have either kept their business going in some form after going back to school or commit to launching future businesses. For more information call David Moody at SLEP 519-332-1820.
We encourage local residents and businesses to support our Summer Company businesses. These have the potential to be our future community leaders and employment generators. We also encourage you to hire a student this summer even if it is only for a short-term project.
