Tang’s China House - Since 1970

Tue, 11/28/2017 - 16:45 -- Jane Janes

Tangs China House is definitely a household name in Sarnia Lambton.  In 1969 a forward thinking young man named Garry Tang, decided to open a restaurant featuring fine dining, coupled with courteous service, that specialized in Chinese food.  Garry and his wife and family worked hard to build the business that is still located at 165 Cromwell Street in downtown Sarnia.    They also brought significant art pieces from Hong Kong such as ceiling tiles, the four stone flower artwork, and the all-wood “Phoenix & Dragon” wall carving which all adorn the restaurant to this very day.

In 1990 Garry was ready to retire and he asked Joe Lee to carry on the business for him.  Joe came to Sarnia as a student of Lambton College in 1971 where he studied electronics and technology.  Joe says “I started working part time at Tangs as I looked for a job in my vocation.  Mr. Tang welcomed me and treated me like a member of his own family, inviting me to work here as long as I needed to.”

Forty seven years later Joe Lee is still here but now he is the owner and general manager and the Tang family still plays an active role supporting the restaurant.  Shortly after Joe took over he launched the current East meets West buffet which expanded the selections by combining oriental and western menus. The buffet is very popular but Joe is hoping that people will come in to experience ordering from the menu.  He says “you can choose your favorite dish and have it prepared especially for you by one of our fine chefs.”  When asked if he has noted any changes over the years he says “I find that the restaurant is doing a lot of take-out business now and the trend seems to be that more people are staying home, they are tired after a long day at work.”

With the upcoming holiday season right around the corner Joe would like to remind his clientele that if they would like to order take-out, please give the restaurant plenty of time so they are not disappointed.  New Year’s Eve is especially popular and you should try to have your order in at least two days ahead.   He would also like to see lots of business in the restaurant as well, and is hoping that customers enjoy ordering from the menu as well as lining up for the deluxe buffet.  Seniors who dine in the restaurant qualify for 10% discount off of their food bill.   Their dishes are prepared with vegetable oil and low MSG and can be tailored according to individual requests.

Tangs is proud of the fact that they were nominated twice for the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Award, once in 2003 and once in 2010.  They are also happy to participate in fundraisers for local charities.
