With its popularity increasing, The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Celebrity Men in a Fashion Event is quickly becoming one of the Foundations most anticipated events. In 2009, a dedicated group of Kidney Foundation volunteers organized the first event in London; now in in 2017 the Sarnia chapter is holding its sixth annual event.

Elaine Hayter, fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation of Canada Sarnia Lambton Chapter says “when I first saw this done in London I loved the idea and I knew we had to bring it to Sarnia. It has really taken off and last year we raised $40,000.00 for the Kidney Foundation.   Every October a committee of eight pick from a list of approximately twelve local celebrities who have been nominated.  These celebrities are always good sports and as well as being our models for the fashion show, they also help promote the event and supply us with a donation for our auction. Once chosen the men are usually advocates of this fundraiser for years afterwards. It is a unique event that has really taken off; an idea that people have grabbed on to.  The first years the audience was primarily female but now we have quite a few men who come and enjoy themselves and maybe “heckle” their friends just a little. It is an evening of fun, fashion and over the top entertainment.”

A “reveal” of the celebrities recently took place at Maran Fashions. Owner Marisa says “Elaine basically came in and said she had a proposition for us that we couldn’t say no to.  She told us that  the idea was to do a fashion show with only men’s wear using local celebrities as the models and she was right, we couldn’t say no.  We hold the reveal here every year and the men come down our stairs and line up behind a terrific and risqué banner designed and photographed by Lorrie Williams, the events photographer”.

Celebrities this year are Brian Hall, chef for Grind Cafe & Catering; Dr. Brian Davies, physician; Eric Ethridge, country singer/chiropractor; Dr. Ryan Slipacoff, dentist for Northern Family & Cosmetic Dental Care; Dr. Lennie Slipacoff, dentist for Northern Family & Cosmetic Dental  Care, Tyler Yates, mortgage broker for The Mortgage Wellness Group; Adam Dumond, realtor for Royal Lepage Key Really; Derian Hatcher, owner Sarnia Sting; Bill Abercrombie, president of the Sarnia Sting; Frank Iacobelli, president Iacobelli Construction; Dr. Murari Patodia, eye physician & surgeon; and Jason McMichael, Government & Community Relations for Local 1089.  The Masters of Ceremony for the event are Andrew Bain and Franco Filia. The sponsors are Maran Fashion, Steeves and Rozema, Lorrie Williams Photography, Quality Inn, Royal Lepage Key Realty, Mike Weir Wine, Iacobelli Construction,  and The Fox 99.9 FM.
Tyler Yates says “it is really cool to help raise money and have some fun in the community, plus it gives my wife and her friends a chance to come out and heckle me, all for a great cause. Simply put, I am just happy I got the phone call to participate”.

Former celebrity models include Andrew Bain, Franco Filia, Justin Hayes, Barry Vosburg,  and George Vandenberg.  George specifically stated that it all came together due to the hard work and dedication of Elaine Hayter and her hard working committee.  “We had a lot of fun, raised a lot of money for the foundation and I am happy to promote it year after year.”

The fashion show is at the Quality Inn on Thursday May 25th and doors open at 6:30.  The first part of the evening is a cocktail party with wine supplied by Mike Weir Wine and aperitifs from Grind Cafe & Catering.  You will have a chance to listen to music, bid on items in their silent auction, purchase raffle tickets, or visit a photography booth. One of many items available to bid on is a trip to Italy donated by Maran Fashions or cooking lessons donated by Grind Cafe & Catering.   The actual fashion show takes place in a separate room where there will be VIP seating around the perimeter of the runway. Tickets are $50.00 and they can be purchased from any of the celebrities, the Quality Inn, Maran Fashion or you can call or order online at 519.344.3462 or men.
